  I posted a few weeks ago about my 12 yo granddaughter learning to weld when she was visiting her other grandparents in France. She brought her project home and entered it in her local county fair in the metalworking category. In spite of being the youngest entrant, she ended up receiving the grand champion ribbon and an invitation to the Illinois state fair competition later this fall. As a metal worker myself, I am so proud of her.

  I’m currently in Chicago with the outdoor tempertaure hovering around 90° F and virtually no wind. The sky is gray, in spite of the weather app on my phone reporting that it’s mostly sunny. I just ventured outside to water a couple of plants on my deck and the smoke from the Boundary Waters wildfire is hanging in the air to the point where it looks like a light fog rolling in. I could only stay out for a few minutes before escaping to the air conditioned house.

  Humble brag alert…and a little bit of nice time news. I just learned that my son’s daughter was accepted into the baccalaureate program at our local high school. It’s a six year advanced placement program for grades 7 through 12. Graduates finish the program with 10 college credits, so that’ll be nice if we still have a livable world by then.
