Hey #NextCloud community around mastodon. I use NextCloud Android app to automatically upload my pictures from my phone to my server, kinda emulating GPhotos. But I found this app very unreliable. Is there any other app that I could use to this automatic upload that is better and/or more reliable than the NextCloud app? Thanks! Edit: I am asking for a better NextCloud android client. I am aware of Immich, but right now is out of discussion for me. Edit2: I am not asking for a new or different service, just to improve what I have now.

@lautmaler@metalhead.club Sure, https://immich.app/ is the best

@lautmaler@metalhead.club I'm not sure Nextcloud does allow different APPs but maybe the way to circumvent this is a "photo gallery app" that backs up pictures to remote storage like Google Pictures backs up onto Google? Should you find a way to make this work please post it. I've been looking for a fix to this problem on and off for some time (years) now :S As much as I love my Nextcloud server that is a point that still needs a lot of love :S

@lautmaler@metalhead.club I'm using Round Sync and created a daily Job to synchronise. https://f-droid.org/packages/de.felixnuesse.extract

@lautmaler@metalhead.club Not specifically an Nextcloud client. Bit I use FolderSync to run a daily sync between the picture folders on cloud and on my phone.

@lautmaler@metalhead.club It was quite reliable until a few months back. I believe it's half issues with the app half Android not allowing the app silently working in the background. The iOS app had the same kind of issue where it needed to listen to the GPS changes to detect new photos and send them. 🙈

@lautmaler@metalhead.club I use Synology photos, but it’s proprietary software. There is also @ente@fosstodon.org, of which I heard say that it’s user friendly, secure and open source.

@lautmaler@metalhead.club If the task is just "take photos from this phone folder and sync them to Nextcloud reliably" I've made good experience with FolderSync (Pro). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite&hl=de My parents have used it successfully for years. For backing up their photos to Nextcloud.

@lautmaler@metalhead.club I've had issues with the play store version as well, but I'm running the foss version from fdroid now and never had any issues again. Same for my GF. Although, in case you're using a Pixel, that might already be it. Don't know why, but the nextcloud app is just trash on stock pixel phones. One could think Google is messing with it for you to go back to Google photos ...
