@lautmaler@metalhead.club I'm not sure Nextcloud does allow different APPs but maybe the way to circumvent this is a "photo gallery app" that backs up pictures to remote storage like Google Pictures backs up onto Google? Should you find a way to make this work please post it. I've been looking for a fix to this problem on and off for some time (years) now :S
As much as I love my Nextcloud server that is a point that still needs a lot of love :S

@SunDancer@metalhead.club I wasn't too happy with Nextcloud on my phone, too. That's not really an answer to your question, but for me the solution is Immich. Runs in a container next to my cloud, does everything I expect it to do - and more (local face recognition for example, without cloud services). @lautmaler@metalhead.club
