It is weird. I think it started because “the baby” or “your baby” makes it sound like an object. People also avoid using “it” for a pronoun in reference to a baby. But that has been the normal way to phrase it for a long time. Especially when you don’t know the sex yet. To me it’s just another example of neutering our language to avoid offending people. Kinda gay.
