An odd and, to me troubling, realization that hits me every once in a while: Concidering my demographic and environment growing up, I am pretty sure that if I hadn't ended up being trans, were slightly dumber and would have had less progressive friends in school, I would not have turned out even slightly as progressive as I did. I would have probably ended up somewhere down the alt-right pipeline, tempted by all the weird fantasies of order and identity so many young people fall for.
