I guess I want to close by stating my biases. I'm a web guy. I've been bullish on the web for 20+ years, and I will continue to be. I think it is an extremely capable and unique platform for delivering software. And it has only gotten better over time while retaining an incredible level of backwards compatibility. The underlying tools we have are dope now. But our current framework layer is working against the grain instead of embracing the platform.

I put these thoughts on The Frontend Treadmill on the blog. https://polotek.net/posts/the-frontend-treadmill/

@polotek@social.polotek.net thx for the thread. I'm muche deeper in the backend and ML part but this reasonates a lot. The ML ecosystem is more recent and hasn't suffered as much as front end but it's getting there: new shiny LLM libraries everyday that tries to provide the new best abstraction over large providers only to be obsolete in 6 months with the new models...

  • @polotek@social.polotek.net so interesting to read. I could rewrite this for #AI, especially the *people doing whatever's cool and not learning the fundamentals* aspect

@polotek@social.polotek.net fantastic thread, 10000% agree. I'm so tired of the treadmill. Not just running on it, but constantly talking about it.

@polotek@social.polotek.net I am happy seeing more and more of this. I feel the front-end world is going into the same traps that backend java did in early days. A load of frameworks and things quickly becoming outdated. The problems to be solved are not changing enough to warrant this, and it is more a fight for "the new cool thing." I am a Java/Kotlin developer with over 20 years of experience. I know Javascript, HTML/CCS and Ajax calls, and all such. I would rather learn Rust and mess with our complex Rust backend than touch the frontend code, which exists merely to provide a simple UI. This feels more like "frontend job security" than something that makes sense.

@polotek@social.polotek.net Could you recommend any courses about web fundamentals?
