Dad, on the other hand, is this distant figure. Either he was always away at work or in some battle or left because of divorce and was never there at all. He gets mythologized. He shows up, if he shows up at all, and lays down the law and the children cower in terror. But he leaves the majority of the messy business of child rearing realities to the mother. He's too busy to be bothered with it and might even get abusive if bothered too much with it.

Mom at least cares about us. Dad on the other hand, we're not so sure. So we seek his approval hoping he might come around to caring more. When we're down, we seek Mom. When we're up, we seek Dad's validation. The male gets mythologized and idolized. The female gets associated with helping us through the messy realities of life - something to avoid to prove you are a big boy/girl now. 4/8
