I'm not an expert either, but I wonder is there any chance that a fan itself is glitching? Was it definitely properly cool before the original crash, or could the crash have been caused by the first episode of overheating?

@unchartedworlds Thanks. Everything was cool before the original crash. Things only heated up after recovery. As noted elsewhere in the thread (not sure where you're jumping in), I'm now pretty sure it's the graphics card that is freaking out when it gets any load put on it.
