The United States just approved its first new sunscreen ingredient since 1999. Europe has used it since 1999. Bemotrizinol blocks both UVA and UVB rays, breaks down more slowly than existing chemical sunscreens, and is absorbed less into the bloodstream than those same sunscreens. @adapalmer@wandering.shop my understanding is that it also has fewer problems with causing people’s eyes to burn (based on conversations on @atpfm@mastodon.social, not my own experience)

  • @adapalmer@wandering.shop that's fantastic i hate zinc oxide sunscreen and avobenzone works ok for me but probably isn't the greatest thing for the environment

@adapalmer@wandering.shop I tried to find out how it is for aquatic/marine environments, but I'm afraid I don't know what a reliable source on this topic is (for example, https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals-the-ocean/how-to-protect-marine-wildlife would be but they don't cover sunscreens as far as I noticed).
