when I was younger I used to think music production was mostly about inventing interesting mic techniques and it’s actually about just recording things really well and not fucking around with them too much

@rdg_music@musicians.today When I apprenticed in a studio, the goal on 95% of tracks was 'just signal, absolutely nothing else'. The few exceptions were performer-specific tweaks that were a part of the signature sound...old junky amp thar makes a guitar buzz on a specific way; tube pre-amp on a vocal, slightly overdriven, that adds a certain huskyness and smears sibilance.
