Dear employers everywhere. The following list is not fully remote: - Remote, but you must live within commuting distance of $office_location - Remote unless you live in $metro_area, in which case you must be in office $x days per week - Remote in $list_of_states - Remote, but we can demand you move to our office location without warning and you have to do so within six months. $Company does not offer relocation assistance. [Editor's note, yes, I saw a company with the audacity to post this for the world to see.] Personally, I'd like to see a new classification of remote-based roles, something like Conditional Remote, that I can just ignore. Requiring in-office time in any way (aside from occasional all-hands or similar) speaks volumes about what you actually think about your employees.

@NotYourSysadmin@infosec.exchange I will play devil's advocate for "Remote, within these states," simply because US Tax law is, quite frankly, insane. The company may not have had sufficient need/time/resources to make themselves able to hire a W-2 employee outside their established state(s). I have had several jobs where I was a 1099-NEC employee for months because the paperwork hadn't gone through to make me eligible to be a W-2 employee. I usually became a W-2 employee within 6-9 months. Only the biggest companies have the time and resources to make themselves open to remote work in all fifty states and all US territories. Everything else you said? Yeah, fuck that noise.
