Brushless excitation has long been used in AC TurboGenerators for reliability and efficiency. The trick is to wind two machines on the rotor shaft, the motor armature and an exciter generator. A second stator winding creates the exciter field. This field is controlled to adjust the strength of the rotor field which controls the machine’s back EMF presented by the stator.
This trick dates back to the 1960’s. A GE friend introduced me to it in the early ‘80s. https://apple.news/A4e3qYxNJR4iwUZzNQ1uodA
