After running TrueNas for a while now I'm considering only using it for storage going forward. I think I'd rather have something else running Proxmox or maybe just Debian with some containers running all my home hosted stuff. Maybe do a 40gb DAS setup between the app server and storage.
I am not a fan of the "app store" model for maintaining external services. In TrueNas they're frequently several versions behind and I can set up this stuff myself with very little effort and write all the automation for keeping things up to date similar to what I used to do before this.

@bflipp That was my progression, I started with TrueNAS and now TrueNAS is a VM on ProxMox. Same hardware. I have a couple VMs and several LXC containers to do all the stuff I struggled with as TrueNAS containers, etc. TrueNAS is great for NAS and so it does that one service well alongside my other workloads. I highly recommend it for a flexible homelab set up. 😁
