@jsit@social.coop @wikipedia@wikis.world Copyrighted material can be added under fair use, but then only limited low-res images could be kept on Wikipedia / Wikimedia's servers strictly for the purpose of illustrating the article. Once it's public domain all restrictions are lifted, which means we can add big high-res pictures, clips, and even the full video of the now-free cartoons not only to the relevant Wikipedia articles, but to the public Commons for everyone to play with completely untethered by any of the limitations of fair-use material.
