I had a fabulous evening at open mic last night. Not many performers, but there were some terrific ones. I ended up doing two sets (I did Do You Do Any Dylan? in the first and the host took umbrage, so I did Tangled Up In Bob in the second. It has my favourite stupid joke in it: "So many CDs that it's tricky to keep track / I have a Saddam Hussein storage system: I keep them in Iraq") and the evening ended with the host persuading a brilliant-but-shy singer, David, to busk Whole Of The Moon with her, and it was just the perfect end to the night. I can't quite articulate why it was such a good night, but the international situation is desperate, as usual, a lot of the human spaces are being taken over by slop, and a bunch of renegades got up on stage to express themselves and connect with each other. I kind of feel like that's what live music is for.
