‘The Two-Bear Mambo’ by Joe Lansdale is the third Hap & Leonard book and the last to be adapted in the (very good) television series making it our last chance to compare the two. The TV show is better.
To be fair that has very little to do with THIS book; changes to characterization during the adaptation of earlier books had left the show with a more likable supporting cast. Also a full, even very short, season of TV gives more room for the story to rundown leads that barely get a mention in the book.
The book really isn’t about the mystery, it’s about the leads’ need to do something even when it’s not that smart. Stupid even. Initially they’re willing to drive to a town controlled by the Klan, rather than call in the law, because they are bored. Later on, after things blowup in their face and the Staties got involved, pride forces them to stick with it. The book spends a lot of time on having the leads recognize the harm this behavior has done to their lives.
