Now, in 2026, I&#39;ve written 3000 words on the subject! #CSS sure has moved on... Just look at this lot to try and understand: list-style, list-item, ::marker, counters(), counter(), @counter-style, symbolic, symbols(), symbols.

One thing I didn't explicitly say is that my focus in this article was on European writing systems. As @ri pointed out privately, I could have also mentioned https://www.w3.org/TR/predefined-counter-styles/ as a resource for non-English content authors, as well as https://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-upright-counters-in-vertical being of interest to the many users of vertically-set text. #i18n #css
