I’m sure I misunderstand the legal meaning of the word “jurisdiction”, because in my understanding of it, if a person is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, they could not be prosecuted for crimes by the United States — as is the case with foreign diplomats. So if the government thinks people here on temporary visas or who have entered illegally are not subject to the jurisdiction, then they shouldn’t be prosecuting these people for crimes. But they are. What am I missing here?
