Poland’s opposition party backed a hilarious new candidate as hopeful for future PM because they’re losing voters to candidates even further right. To the kind of people Elon Musk gifts his poorly-selling tin can* to as if it were a prize worth receiving. The kind of people who think dousing a Hanukkah menorah in parliament with a fire extinguisher constitutes a statement. The kind of people who think domestic violence is OK and march into hospitals to harass staff about abortions. They think that by backing a hardliner candidate is how they can stop voters drifting toward the radical right. Basically, go there yourself and wait for them to come to you instead. Inspired. Poland has a coalition government still finding its footing but blocked at every turn by a president from the opposition who has a strong attachment to his veto. Poland also has thousands of megawatts of untapped wind potential, but that main opposition candidate went on national radio to argue that Poland should stay loyal to its coal, that renewables are expensive, and that the EU’s climate policies are an affront. He also confirmed, to journalists who I imagine were trying to keep straight faces, that yes, he does have solar panels on his roof that he installed five years ago partially subsidized by a government scheme. And yes, they’ve cut his electricity bill by nearly half. But he is now considering removing them in protest or solidarity, I’m not sure which. Hahahaha. He’s so committed that he is willing to pay more for electricity. That’s dedication.
