My 12y old is fascinated by retro tech.
Playing with cassette tapes and stuff all the time.
Trades messages and dumb little python/scratch programs with his buddies at school with actual 3.5" floppies.
Burning CD's for the lolz.
They learned about encryption in a "spy school" class, and they joke about how it is secret in the sense that almost nobody can read their messages because they don't have the tech. A fun security through obscurity angle.
Kids these days...

@aeischeid@mastodon.social we and my friend, we were also exchanging encrypted messages in 80ies in school. we had pretty impressive advancements, started first from sherlock's dancing man, then discovered mathias sandorf's grid and were trying to prepare good grids, then used pens that had custom invisible ink it it and we were keeping another chemistry that would allow to read such messages in the inner pocket of our school jackets.
