i’ve been working in higher education for 35 years. for the 1st time, i’m faced with the problem of my moral code not alligning with the ethics of my employers. i’m frustated/disgusted by their promotion/support of generative #AI (#LLMs ). At every opportunity when the subject arises, i - and some colleagues - highlight the ethical issues, but all we get in return is « yes, but … ». Academia has a responsibility to do what is best for its students and society. we are currently failing.

@jpaulgibson@mastodon.ie it's entirely possible to teach the technology and principles of the LLMs without actually using any of the currently existing models. though purely within context of this back and forth, I would whole agree with you... and also not everything needs to be AI, we were doing just fine before corpos tried shoving AI into everything under the sun (and maybe even the sun, if they could).

We'll do a communication campaign using the word responsible several times though. Now be a good academic and take a nuanced and balanced stance."
