ℹ️ mountainance ℹ️ Just finished a pg_repack on the Mastodon database on mountains.social (sort of a defrag that you might know from the old Windows days for your harddisk, but without the cool mesmerizing little squares). The DB went from 120 GB to roughly 100 GB. For the pg_repack I had to increase the volume where the database is located on, as this process takes lots of temporary space (max double the size of the largest table in the database). Afterwards the DB is smaller, but the volume can't be shrunk on the fly. In the first weekend of April I will upgrade the PostgreSQL software from version 15 to 18 and during this process I'm going to relocate the database on a smaller volume as well. This means however a longer than usual downtime (do also not want to rush it, take proper backups, etc). We are talking 1-2 hours of downtime (best guesstimate at the moment). Of course I will let you know later when exactly this will start. Task for the ones on mountains.social: start planning a nice hike, ride, walk or dogsled tour, so you are fully prepared for the maintenance window 🙂 #MountainsAdmin
