@darktable@photog.social I can't find other posts in this thread, hence the self-answer. There was a previous post where someone asked "what can be done" regarding a new user onboarding.
I am hesitant to barge in with an opinion, as the work done by Darktable volunteers is great, and I am super appreciative of the efforts! At no point below do I mean to say that improvements are a must, given how awesome Darktable already is.
When I think about what would have helped me when starting with Darktable, I think a passive configurable to-do list with a hierarchy would be helpful. An example mock-up is attached. I was confused why Darktable, which bills itself as a "photography workflow application", has no concept of a workflow explicitly in its UI. I later learned about the scene-referred workflow, an order of modules, etc, but it was a steep curve. Not something a newbie thinks when reading the word "workflow", IMHO.
Maybe nested workflows in a distant future. Maybe actual guided and programmable workflows based on the workflow tree, e.g. after reviving the https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/16722
