My son&#39;s potential work placement fell through so I&#39;m hoping the fediverse can step up and help me out. My 16yo son is looking for a work placement in an engineering company. Mechanical engineering would be preferable as he is planning on studying that in uni. He&#39;s a smart and dependable first year college student studying math, physics and electronics. He&#39;s predicted to get triple As, is very academic but also likes the practical side of things. He&#39;s looking for a work placement from 8-10 July (3 days total) in the UK. We live in Hampshire but he&#39;s willing to commute for a meaningful work placement. I&#39;m even willing to book a hotel room for a good work placement anywhere else in the UK. @Chrissy@mountains.social do you mean a 3-day placement? Or a longer placement starting then? I can't help, but thought that some clarity would help.

@Chrissy@mountains.social Finding meaningful work experience at that age is really difficult - so few opportunities. My son is in Year 13 (going to university to study mech eng) and last year he printed off his (brief) CV and my wife drove him to a few local business parks. She sat in the car, he walked around (looking up companies on his phone), rang buzzers and just chatted to people. It was incredibly brave of him, but he did get four days at a company. I can't say it was amazing, but it was something.

@Chrissy@mountains.social this is a bit out of the box possibly but some of the heritage railway folks like at the Festiniog Railway in Pothmadog where they have full time workshops are small enough to be flexible and very hands on places.

@Chrissy@mountains.social That's the sort of thing my place offer although it's usually for a week rather than 3 days. We combine physics, mechanical engineering and electronics. I'm hesitant to publicly say what we do as I would immediately dox myself - it's a niche industry. I'll pass up your request tomorrow if you think going as far as Wrexham is doable.
