3d video games have looked good since at least the mid-late 90s and trying to chase photorealism instead of stylization and working with limitations is stupid and the latter is always strictly better because it at least shows that you have your own idea of aesthetic and art

    @q66 lowk chasing realism over style has made games look worse since AT LEAST 2006

    @q66 this (and my own comparing it to bad HD textures with no baked lighting added willy-nilly to old game models) got me thinking and i've got a theory the investors don't want any aesthetic or artistic merit but are chasing after a decades-old high of being there for something looking "innovative" and thus this shit looks good to them not because it actually looks good or the story or game itself are evocative of anything, but because the shittiness means it's Innovative

    @q66 I find it particularly comical that AAA games go for ultradetailed photorealism then put big glowing halos around enemies, pulsating arrows that tell you where to go and flashing lights that indicate objects you can interact with, because otherwise the game is unplayable
