Just re-read a 1957 Isaac Asimov short story called Profession.
In this story people don't learn anything, they have a technology where they are just given the knowledge.
The technology doesn't work on the main character, who has to learn "the old fashioned way", by reading books.
Eventually he comes to realise that it is people like him, who have to learn "shred by shred", who have the capacity for original thought and come up with innovation.
Seems extremely prescient.
