Haven't been online as much this past week, so not sure if this has been covered. But my thoughts on Meta abandoning the metaverse (admittedly now Valve have a headset ready to release, so I don't need to worry about the Quest going offline) is dismay that these companies can extract so much money from us that they can afford to piss so much of it away on long shots. I was once told by a Very Sensible Person that it was, in fact, OK that Apple pissed away (I think) $10bn on their self-driving car project, because companies take a punt on potential products all the time. I don't doubt that, but the dollar amount is sickening. They shouldn't be able to gamble $10bn, never mind what Zuck set on fire in his latest "I have no idea what actually makes money after the site to rate women at college" escapade. Our school district is in crisis, over an amount of monies which these companies make in seconds.
