I just wrote out some thoughts on the Linux desktop and how to make the experience better. The tl;dr version is that I'm not expecting the Linux desktop to go mainstream, although I wouldn't mind if it did, and, even if a lot of people see no reason to use Linux, they might change their mind at some point if they become unhappy with the direction that Windows or MacOS are going, so it is important for Linux to be there as an alternative.
