A thing I just discovered about the Mastodon web UI: You can edit the Alt text on a post you previously made, or add Alt text if you forgot to, by selecting Edit and then clicking the Alt Text widget after the edit form opens. This probably seemed obvious to whoever implemented it, but if it wasn't obvious to me as a sometime UI designer/implementer, then it isn't to everyone else either.

    @CliftonR@wandering.shop I also speculate that edit capability may not be universal, as well.

    @CliftonR@wandering.shop It doesn't help that I think that's a thing that changed in the last couple years? (Maybe longer, what is time anymore?) As I know that when I first started using Masto/Fedi full time, the ability to edit/add alt text after posting wasn't a thing. I remember when it changed, even if I don't remember where in the linear timeline it occurred. So it's possible part of the reason you didn't realize is originally you couldn't, depending on how long you've been on Fedi.
