The SSC's cancelation wasn't due to a lack of effort on his part.
He was perhaps the most enthusiastic promoter of the project, even pushing for it in his popular book "The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What Is the Question?", but ultimately Congress ended it.

Even still, as said earlier, he had quite a career - acknowledged not only by his winning the prestigious Wolf Prize for Physics in 1982, but also the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1988, so, you know, not too shabby, all things considered, right? 7/
