"Free updates for life" only works if the purchase-base continually grows. Blender users are getting upset about the new licensing rules from Superhive, but...you don't HAVE to upgrade Blender.
Users have gotten spoiled, but in a shrinking economy, things change.

Do I love this change? Fuck no. No one wants to have to pay for more things...but if the choice is "developers stop making updates" or "You choose if you WANT to update", I think the later is better.
