Dance scene I edited from "The Night Court" (1927). This was one of the very first talkies. It was shot while "The Jazz Singer" was being made next door. The dance costumes were used in both movies.
The sound was recorded on a Vitaphone disk synced to the film. I found a really nice digital copy of the original disk and added that audio to this scene.

🧵 This scene has a racist context. The song playing is "When Erastus Plays His Old Kazoo". 👎 It was written by 3 white guys (of course). It became a jazz standard played by both white and black bands. A good song with a lousy name. While this movie was being made Al Jolsen was singing "Mammy!" in blackface in the studio next door. The 1920s had problems. #jazz #film
