@wonderofscience@mastodon.social In case anyone's wondering why the Hubble telescope is named that, Edwin Hubble definitively proved that there are other galaxies beyond the Milky Way -- in 1923.
We've only known for certain that Milky Way wasn't the only galaxy -- we've only known that there was a universe beyond our own cluster of stars -- for the past hundred years.

@wonderofscience@mastodon.social Ever wonder why there wasn't much space opera science fiction before the 20th century? Because humans literally didn't know that there was a ginormous universe for Captain Kirk to explore until the 20th century.
