NBC's producing the Winter Olympics from its studios in Connecticut. But, what happens when a commentator in Italy wants the volume on their in-ear monitor raised? The round-trip time is too long to have the sound sent back and forth to Italy. So, instead, the tech in Connecticut slides a fader, which moves a virtual fader on a "mixer in a box" in Italy, so the volume is controlled remotely, but the sound stays local.
