What petty past grievances are you still sometimes mad about?

When I was in third or fourth grade, we had to take a swimming test for a badge in sports class. Basically you had to prove you can swim for a certain time, jump into the water and dive. If you got the badge, you could attach it to your swim suit to show you can swim in deep water. I had no problem with the swimming and jumping, but then came the diving. The poolwater was heavily clorinated and it hurt my eyes. I usually wore goggles, however the teacher decided that we weren’t allowed goggles for the test. We had to dive for a ring. I remember being above the ring, going down, but then I couldn’t find it. Due to the chlorine I couldn’t open my eyes and I searched the ground with my hands. Eventually I was out of breath and had to go up again. The teacher decided I had failed the test because I couldn’t bring the ring back up, even though it was clear that I was able to dive and stay under water for a long time. I never got that badge. I’m not sure why, I think I could have redone the test in a swimming class outside of school, but my parents never cared to sign me up because ultimately the badge wasn’t that important. I’m still a bit mad because I feel like I should have been allowed goggles in such a heavily chlorinated pool.

One time I was in a class where we had this beginner level web dev assignment, and we were writing HTML and CSS. We had to submit the assignment as a zip file. When you open the HTML from the zip file in Windows without unzipping it, it can't access other files in the zip file, namely the CSS. The entire class failed the assignment because the teacher didn't unzip the files first, and refused to entertain the idea they might have screwed up.

Wrote a satirical column in the Uni school paper making fun of a department. Chair of department took umbrage. They gave me a bad grade in a class I needed to graduate, forcing me to retake the class. Worth it.

I wouldn’t really say I’m mad about it, but I still think about it over 20 years later. On the seventh grade science final test, I wrote that mice eat plants and weeds. The science teacher took two points off because weeds are plants if it wasn’t for this I would’ve gotten 100 on the test.

When I was 8, I was playing skee ball at an arcade. I had $2 in quarters in a small cup on the railing while I played. Another kid and his brother came by and started talking to me. While the one kid distracted me, the other stole my cup. Once I realized what happened my older brother and I flagged the security guard. We found the kids holding the same cup (pretty distinctive because it came from another spot on the boardwalk) with exactly $2 in it. The security guard couldn't do anything because I didn't actually see them take it. I still remember the kids grin when he realized he got away with it. $2 30+ years later and I'm still tilted about it. That one interaction warped my view of people my entire life.

The many times my security deposit was stolen from me. The municipality should hold its people's deposits, and the landlord can prove in a court of law they deserve it. Shouldn't be a problem because landlords never try to steal people's deposits right?

Not sure I ever really get mad about it anymore, but it still bugs me from time to time. I struggled in high school. I had anger issues going in, and I got expelled for punching one teacher and throwing a desk at another. I'm a lot better now (plus, that was like 30 years ago). I went into home schooling for a couple years, and kept getting told that I was ahead of my peers due to how much work I was doing. I came back to school at the end of grade 11 having been advised that I would only need to attend half days in my senior year due to how far ahead I was. Turned out I was behind in credits. And a teacher once took advantage of my position. So this teacher had a rule, anyone who could type faster than him — he set the bar at 50WPM, which isn't hard for an adult, but for a student, for a generation mostly not raised around tech (I was, however), it was difficult and most were not expected to meet it (20WPM was required to pass his class) — you could not fail, as he would bump you up one letter grade. Anyone failing would be given a D and pass. Teacher didn't like me because I typed differently. I held my right hand over shift, enter, and space. My left hand hit all the letters. I know, it's unconventional as hell. He said I wouldn't pass his class if I couldn't type right. (Long story short, I do now.) I said, let me take your speed test. He booted up the program and stood over me, and I hit 55WPM. I can't remember what the program was. I remember typing like two paragraphs, so I think he just clocked me in Word or WordPerfect or whatever we were using as a word processor on the computers. He was furious I beat his score, so he marched me down to the principal's office and said he just watched me cheat on a test. He told me privately he'd only let me pass his class if I retook the typing test, but typing normally. So, I learned to do so and hit 60. That's pretty good for a high school student. I think professionals (like, say, a secretary) start at around 100WPM, though. Beat him at his own game, twice. And he couldn't be the bigger man about it and congratulate me or anything. I did pass his class though. Maybe I should be thankful he got me to type "correctly" (and I still do). I've told the story in person and have been asked to demonstrate the old method. I can still do it, but I don't prefer it, and I'm a bit slower. I think I can do it at around 35-45 these days? I type "correctly" between 60-80WPM now. So if you see me up here with a long ass post like this, know that it took about as long as a non-technical user posts 1-2 paragraphs. Really not much at all.

English, senior year of high school. The one class I got a B in throughout high school. Stupid opinionated class. I still believe that teacher didn't like me. Got A's on college with the same writing style. Fuck you, Mrs. Farnsworth. I don't care that it's been nearly 20 years now.

Mad at myself for not having asked out high school crush who I realized at some point I could have had a shot with. It likely wouldn't have lasted long but it would have been something at least. I've let fear cage me in for so long. I don't know what I'm doing anymore.

Oh man. Second job ever, dipping my toes into IT as a PC tech at an office supplies retail store. Freshly minted CompTIA A+ hardware/software certification under my belt. Have a customer debate me on me declaring that SDRAM is and always will be faster than DRAM memory. Customer walked out after complaining to my manager. Got chewed out by manager, but kept job, though I was noticeably meeker with future interactions. Retail sucks. More than 20 years later, I'm still right.

A kid traded my shiny bakugan for a black one at lunch after asking to "borrow" mine. This was during elemental school. I hold that grudge against your Ryan, I have kept you in the back of my mind for decades and will enact vengeance eventually.
