My advice on social media privacy has always been: Tweet like Buzzfeed is watching.
My advice for Mastodon is: post (and DM) like the admin of your instance is reading everything.

And to be clear, "post like your admin is reading everything" isn't necessarily a negative. How you feel about this will depend a lot on whether you know/trust the admin and what kind of things you post/DM about. But it's important that folks make that decision based on their personal context.
