I think one of the tragedies of the aughts is that people thought java and the ideas behind and around it were garbage because it looked the same whatever the quality of the code and the system. we lost the JVM, XML, weirdass stuff like javaspaces, and we've been trying to recreate things using json and javascript and WASM and ever growing browser technology. in fact all of computing history starting from the 80ies falls into the category of throwing the baby out with the bathwater because the water has foam, and then filling the tub with whatever rain puddle happened to be at hand.
