This is a great article and I had first-hand exposure to some of the racism and arrogance about the Ngāi Tahu settlement, which was awful even by 1990s standards.     (1/2) @SusannahWrites@mastodon.nz I agree that some of the discourse around the Kāi Tahu settlement was woeful by today's standards. But it's important to put this in its historical context. This was the first Tiriti o Waitangi settlment, so no one could be sure what it might or might not include. It was happening against a backdrop of rampant corporatisation and sell-offs of public commons by both the 4th Labour and 4th National govts. Contemporary concepts like co-governance hadn't been articulated yet.
