@feld @volt4ire At least with Apps Store it could somewhat make sense, or like distributing it on itch.io with "name your own price", although those are one-time-only. (And foss or not we all know there's going to be third-party distribution :P)

@volt4ire I've seen "pay for binaries" before, especially for mobile apps. Sometimes the compromise is: binaries available on F-Droid.

@volt4ire Ha, I use Strawberry (it's a very nice music player) and I'm very happy to support the maintainer on Patreon which gets me the macOS builds I can use on my work laptop and hopefully encourages them to keep supporting it.

@volt4ire Honestly fair. They're not paying for the code, they're paying for the convenience of not needing to compile it themselves. And compiling for those platforms is quite a challenge even for experienced wizards. Porting it in the first place is even harder. I see it fully justified to charge money for that.
