Mom calls me and needs #techsupport. She wants to take a screenshot. «Usually, these go into the photo library, no?» Yes, on her iPhone. Not on her Mac. (🤦‍♂️) I explain that she should find them on her desktop. She looks for it, finds nothing. I ask her to share her screen. Indeed. Nothing on the desktop. I ask her to take a screenshot, again. The little widget appears in the lower right corner of the screen, but it looks … … suspiciously different to what I&#39;m used to.

I have a hunch. Ask her to click on the Dropbox symbol in the menu bar. And indeed, there are the screenshots. Because #Dropbox decided that they want to siphon off all their users' screenshots for data extraction reasons, they change fundamental aspects of how an operating system works, and confuse users (because stuff suddenly works differently than before) – and the people that support these users (because now I have to be aware of all the ways software like Dropbox can fuck up a system).

@xeophin@swiss.social On macOS, screenshots are not added to the photo library. If you open the Screenshot app, there is an Options button that will let you pick the default location for saving them. It will also tell you the current default save location. That setting will also apply when you take a screenshot using the keyboard shortcuts, you just wouldn't see the Options button in that case.
