Yeah that’s exactly it.
Gtk3 is considered legacy now
Cinnamon and Xfce still exist though. It’s not like gtk3 is suddenly out of use.

I thought this post was referring to the “gnomed” phenomenon where people boot up their pc and all of a sudden it loads up the gnome DE, without having it installed previously lol

It’s not like gtk3 is suddenly out of use. That’s true, however GNOME will drop support for it at some point. I guess Cinnamon or xfce could maintain their own forks, however the majority of apps target what GNOME is currently using given it’s the most popular desktop environment.
