The original plan was for HS2 to be the start of a network of high speed rail in the UK going to Manchester, Leeds, the north etc. Sunak at the stroke of a pen cut it to a shuttle service between London and Birmingham - economic vandalism 2. The main driver for the first part of HS2 is capacity - the West Coast Main Line is nearly full and the lines in to Birmingham are heavily congested so need a new line In the UK, engineers can build infrastructure, but politicians can't!
