Trying to figure out how best to modernize We Distribute’s site theme. I’ve been experimenting with the customization system in the twentytwentyfive base theme WordPress ships with and…it’s kind of good, but just not quite where it needs to be.
Right now, it’s all held together with a crusty expired paid theme. It needs a facelift. I’m not sure if I want to write my own theme from scratch, but a lot of paid themes hard-code so much stuff that I don’t need or want.

What’s kind of frustrating is that there aren’t really any #WordPress themes that capitalize on Fediverse integration. I don’t mind adding custom stuff in, but I’m torn between either altering a proprietary theme, or trying to code my own from scratch. Building from scratch means way more work, but it’s theoretically well-supported to do what I want. Altering something that exists means technical debt, on a system that could change at any time. I just don’t know what to do. Do I put all the work up front, or do it over time on the backend?
