Sitting here and realising I might genuinely have spent twice as many hours on trying to apply for money for myself or other people to do further research as I have on actually researching anything seriously, over the past 12 months. Why do we run systems like this? Is this really a good use of every academic's time?

    @JubalBarca Honestly, I think we'd get more and higher quality research out if every professor just got a flat rate, no matter what institution they're at or how large their group is. yes, it would lead to much smaller groups, And some bad ideas not getting filtered out, but I think on average it would be a win

    @JubalBarca Hear here. I've applied for lots of stuff in the last two years, but done almost no actual research - because applying for grants is more important to my employer.
