@waeiski@vis.social @dancingtreefrog@mastodon.social I’m close to being windows free too. But it comes at the cost of a Mac. My work requires windows or Mac. So it’s out of my hands, but I think a Mac is preferable over windows by a mile.

@waeiski@vis.social if only Adobe, Topaz et al created Linux implementations of their photography software! And please don't suggest using Linux equivalents as there's nothing that comes close to the functionality and easy workflow for my usage. So my main machine stays W11, the laptop and reserve machine are going Linux.

@waeiski@vis.social and if you haven't seen the Linux light yet you'll learn, as I did, more about how the thing works and the FOSS community and computing than you did running windows.

@waeiski@vis.social why does everyone think people are going to stop using their Windows machines because Microsoft no longer supports it? Corporations rely on Microsoft for support. Everyone else uses the internet The computer will run for 10+ more years

@waeiski@vis.social I already run Linux Mint on my main computer. I'm not worried by the lack of Microsoft "support" for my second-hand Windows 10 laptop. I'm fairly confident I have prevented Microsoft from changing anything on it. It's two uses are:- 1/ Running an offline version of OneNote, the only Microsoft application I like. 2/ Updating the music on the old iPod I use in the car, using CopyTrans Manager instead of iTunes.

@waeiski@vis.social I already did that on my son's computer, but I can't find an alternative to Rhinoceros, Autodesk or Adobe. Curious how locked in many people are

@waeiski@vis.social I highly recommend Linux Mint for its superb hardware support. Cheers and be free

@waeiski@vis.social Does this mean Windows 10 itself will stop working, or worse, force me to "upgrade" to Windows 11?

@waeiski@vis.social i think a better solution would be to just use LTSC 2021 as it's going to be supported until 2027/2032 rather than make people relearn how to use a computer lol
