I could be content for the rest of my days with only books, plays, and live music to fulfill my cultural entertainment needs. It’s funny that this is a pretentious take for elite snobs when it takes so much less effort to put on a play or music performance than it does to record a film or album. ANYONE can do a play. You could! Maybe you should.

I love movies and records, don’t get me wrong! And I understand the logic of capital — it’s cheaper and helps cement their power if they make and distribute recorded entertainment to the masses versus giving us the leisure time to entertain ourselves. But if I survive a civilization collapse, I have no concerns about getting entertained.

@mycorrhiza@post.lurk.org I did! I had a friend in my early 20s who was putting on Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the director dropped out, so I stepped in with no experience. We "borrowed" the furniture from the apartment I was renting for set dressing, I controlled all the lighting by just flicking the mains switch, we ran audio off my phone plugging into a speaker. It was insanely fun, one of the things I'm most proud of.
