After the German occupation of the Netherlands, Schaft became active opposing the Nazis and protecting Dutch Jews. She stole identity papers so Jews could avoid deportation; actions that brought her to the attention of the Council of the Resistance, who recruited her at age 20. She was asked to be a courier but Schaft refused - she wanted to kill Nazis. (2/6)

Shaft engaged in sabotage (including blowing up a power station), transported weapons, & conducted assassinations. She, along with sisters Truus & Freddie Oversteegen, became a 3 woman assassination team. Schaft killed German soldiers, Dutch Nazis, collaborators & traitors. She became fluent in German, allowing her to tempt German soldiers as a honeypot. She was wanted by the Nazis, but known only as ‘the girl with red hair’.
