If automated driving were intended to make driving safer or more efficient, current solutions are wrong. In fact, good solutions to these have existed for a long time. Unfortunately for investors (read opportunists), these weren't profitable: vehicle networking, infrastructure, and automated handovers... (tech that worked pretty well by the mid-1990's). Instead, they realized they could more easily market and profit from the DARPA-style autonomous model, meant to work without any cooperation from any part of the system (or any other system not owned by the same group of companies). An utterly idiotic way to design any automated system. Yet they still pretend it's about the safety and efficiency. In other words, self-driving vehicles - taxis included - as implemented and developed today, are just more enshittification.

Just like electric vehicles of the 1970's, documentaries will be made 30 years from now and everyone will wring their hands and pretend Oh we didn't know but now it's too late and can we interest you in an overpriced version of 1990's tech??
