I didn’t realise the there was a full Stilgoe and Skellern show available on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7Vc0lOV6Iw&feature=youtu.be This sort of show, two men with a piano and a bunch of funny songs, is something that has disappeared by the wayside. The most famous British duo that did this were Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. They came up with that song about some hippopotami singing about glorious mud. If you’re of a certain age and culture mix, you know it Sir Richard Stilgoe is one of the best lyricists in the business, far beyond writing some of the world’s best-selling musicals, his lyrics are characterised by wit, depth, and some very unlikely rhyming. Peter Skellern was one of the famous voices of the 1970s, in an industry that was slowly being overshadowed by the arrival of pop, he kept to older forms of music. So when they get together you get an evening of amazing music, full of emotion and fun. I watched this last night, after sending it to a friend and it was magnificent. Do watch it.
