I don't understand why digital euro is needed when direct payments can be done in so many ways. Whether it is online or in a brick and mortar shop.

Hello @Catha@masto.es, existing methods are fragmented with different cards, apps, national schemes, each with their own rules and fees. The digital euro is meant to work everywhere in the euro area, online and offline, 24/7, with legal tender status so it is generally accepted by merchants. It would also help to reduce our dependence on non-EU payment solutions and therefore boost EU strategic autonomy.
